France to ban smoking in public parks, beaches
- Starting July 1, 2025, France will prohibit smoking in outdoor areas where minors are present, such as beaches, parks, bus stops, public gardens, school surroundings, and sports venues.
- The ban follows the government’s National Anti-Tobacco Programme aimed at achieving a tobacco-free generation by 2032 and reflects growing public and local authority actions.
- The prohibition covers beaches, parks, public gardens, school surroundings, bus stops, and sports venues but excludes cafe terraces and electronic cigarettes from restrictions.
- Health Minister Catherine Vautrin said, “Tobacco must disappear where there are children,” and violators will face fines up to 135 euros .
- The ban aims to reduce tobacco exposure to minors amid France’s 23.1% daily smoking rate and about 75,000 annual tobacco-related deaths, supporting wider anti-smoking efforts.
