UN Oceans Conference Calls for Global Action on Plastic Pollution
- The third UN Ocean Conference took place on June 10, 2025, in Nice, where nearly 100 countries demanded a bold, legally binding global plastics treaty.
- This call follows years of rapid negotiations since December 2022 and a key breakthrough in Busan six months ago outlining a draft treaty covering plastics throughout their lifecycle.
- Speakers, including Native American advocate Frankie Orona, highlighted the human rights crisis caused by plastic pollution's toxic chemicals affecting Indigenous and frontline communities.
- The treaty, with 32 to 33 articles, aims to cut plastic production, ban toxic additives, hold polluters accountable, and ensure direct funding to affected communities, as stated by key negotiators and advocates.
- The next and final negotiation round is scheduled for August 5–14 in Geneva, where governments will decide whether to conclude a treaty to curb plastic pollution or allow it to worsen.
